Your study abroad advisor will provide you anOverseas Expense Verificationthat breaks down all costs for the program you will attend, and you then share that with the financial aid advisor when you meet with them.

A more open society will be more progressive about LGBTQ+ rights than a less tolerant society, however students can expect to have more culturally nuanced experiences. The Fa'afafine community in American Samoa, identifying themselves as third-gender, provides a concrete example of how gender identity is approached very differently in another culture. The legal status of same-gender marriage and sex are often metrics used to judge the openness of a society. You are encouraged to learn and explore the social climate and local conditions of your chosen country of interest using the recourses links below and to ask questions about LGBTQ+ safety abroad issues with your Study Abroad Advisor.

Religion is an important aspect of many cultures, and study abroad can expose you to a variety of different belief systems.

Though many women have successful experiences abroad each year, women travelers may face greater obstacles when traveling due to differences in their host country’s cultural values, attitudes, and behaviors toward women. The College of Staten Island, CUNY is a member of the College Consortium for International Studies whose mission is to provide a broad spectrum of quality international education opportunities abroad. CSI shares the CCIS vision of commitment to expanding opportunities for students to participate in high quality and affordable international education study abroad programs in diverse locations. Of course, being aware of the legal LGBTQ+ landscape in a country is imperative. Several resources listed below describe the legal and cultural LGBTQ+ climate in other countries. Below are some resources to utilize for our Jewish students, particularly those who need a kosher experience when studying abroad. College of Staten Island students may apply for participation in a range of programs administered by other CUNY campuses. Most of these programs are offered during the January winter session and summer sessions, while some semester programs are also available. To facilitate testing for required medical clearance to return to campus, tests will continue to be accepted from non-CUNY testing providers as well as from CUNY safeCircle test sites.

Testing:

Children accompanying a visitor who have business to tend to on campus for a limited time. CUNY’sVisitor Policyis designed to restrict anyone who has not been fully vaccinated or has not received a recent negative COVID-19 test from entering a CUNY campus or office. Participation in the random surveillance testing is mandatory and failure to participate will result in the removal of the individual’s Cleared4 access pass to CUNY spaces.

Any decisions on shutting down particular buildings/areas within campuses, individual campuses, or multiple campuses, as appropriate, will be made by the Chancellery/COO’s Office in consultation with local/State authorities. All individuals should follow the CDCdomestic travel recommendationsandinternational travel recommendationsbefore reporting to work or campus and notify their manager in advance of the travel dates and should quarantine be required. Given that vaccines are mandatory for students living in campus housing, housing and dorms will resume normal operations with 100% of occupants fully vaccinated. Campus housing will ensure that adequate space is reserved for those residents who may need to isolate or quarantine. Protocols, such as those suggested by theAmerican College Health Association, are in place to care for those residents in isolation.

Whether you practice a religion or not, it is important to understand your beliefs in the context of your future host country’s religious culture and the role religion plays in daily life. CSI students will also need to complete a program application with the sponsor if you are attending another CUNY college program, a CCIS program that is not sponsored by CSI, or any other Unaffiliated program. Testing to return to campus should only be done at CUNY safeCircle test sites when you are symptom free to protect you and others in the CUNY community. If you are recovering from COVID-19, you should not get tested until you have completed your isolation requirements and are symptom free. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, we encourage you to visit a public testing site near your home or use an at-home test kit. CUNY and CSI remain dedicated to providing a safe and healthy environment for our students, faculty and staff for the Fall 2022 semester. We continue to adhere to the latest CDC guidance and any requirements from New York State and New York City as well as CUNY’s policies and procedures.
